What in what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Anchor 1

Opening Sequence analysis 1-5

Opening Sequence evalution 6-10

Opening Sequence evalution 11-15

Opening Sequence evalution 16-20

I analysed 20 different opening title sequences in so that i could learn about the different ways in which they convey their film before it even starts. I liked the idea of the opening title sequence teasing the film so that the viewer is hooked and wanting to watch more, this is what i tried to with my film by showing very fast paced shots of the inside of the game, this gave it a mysterious vibe to it and hopefully it would make the audience want to watch more.
I did also analyse the titles of all the films carefully so that i could see how they are positioned on the screen. They were mostly out of the way of any faces or anything significant, I then made sure i did the same as i felt that it was important. Also the font of the titles always related to the genre of the film, for example in James Bond films, the text is always formal and proffessional looking. This means that when I was choosing a font for the opening title sequence i made sure that it was square and looked sci-fi/techno to fit with the genre. I achieved this by making the colour of the last title blue which is a colour often asociated with the sci-fi/technology genre of film.
The music also played a big part in a lot of film opening title sequences such as in the Terminator title sequence that I analysed, this was also a sci-fi film and the pitch of the music is high and it sounds very tense but mysterious at the same time, this is what we tried to achieve with the music in our opening title sequence.

Also we used the idea of the long black robes for the costume for Lance as we felt that it was a good way of representing the darkness in him and showing that he is the antagonist. There are many films that use black long robes to give the antagonist a dark scary effect examples are; Harry Potter with Lucius Malfoy, Proffesor Snape and Voldemort; Star Wars with The Emporer, Kylo Ren and Darth Vader or Snow White with the Evil Queen.

Films have helped when developing the titles because they gave ideas when it came to animating the titles and designing them, we took insipration from the sci-fi films that were analysed, for example, our titles looked like The Terminator's titles since they were both sci-fi films. Despite this we did try to make so that it was different in some ways so the font that we used wasnt exactly the same and ours was a slightly different shade of colour. Our productuion has been personalised because the music is very original but then at the same time it does fit our genre because it sounds similar to video games/ arcade, this helps suppport the meaning of the film as it would subconsciously make people have an idea of the genre and what it is going to be about.

In real media products, the Titles are often all exactly the same throughout the entire sequence so that it is easy to see where the titles are and what they say. We tried to challenge this tecnique of always keeping them exactly the same font, colour and style but in a way that you can still see and understand the titles. Throughout our sequence the titles are mostly white however when it shows clips of inside the video game the titles subtly change. The font stays the same but it is given more of a 3D effect and then it also changes colour to red as I feel that this gives negative connotations of evil and death. By doing this it gives the effect that being inside the video game is going to be much more interesting as well as also being scarier and much more dangerous.

I also developed the fact that some films like to tease their film in the opening title sequence by showing small clips of the film or a part of the storyline. For example in the opening title sequence of the film 'Dawn of the Dead' there are various short clips and the audio shows how people are scared and how the various has struck. I developed on this for our film because I created a sequence to go at the end of our opening title sequence where there is a short clip of a gameboy dropping to the ground which is a teaser for the audience so they will want to watch on and find out what happens. This will cause much speculation for the audience and it means that they would pay attention when watching as they would want to try and work out what that final scene in our opening title sequence actually symbolised.

Also another way that we challenged real media products was that, in most opening title sequences it is often dark so create the effect of mystery and despite the fact we did do this for the clips in the game, we did set the opening title sequence in an arcade which is has a lot of bright colours flashing and changing colour. This was to display the contrast and difference between both the game and real life and also create an anti stereotype since the inside of games are often shown as colourful and bright but we did the opposite and made the inside of the game dark and scary. We also made the lighting of real life very bright and colourful just like it would be displayed on the inside of a game in a stereotypical real media product.

The costumes that we have used in our film have been developed from the film 'Scott Pilgrim Vs the World' we have done this for the main character because in SPVTW the main character has jeans and top give the impression he is a normal teenager so we did the same but we wanted to make the audience relate even more so we added props like the earphones as many teenagers that age probably listen to music and we put more emphasis on the shoes that in SPVTW as we felt that this part of the costume could make people allow people to relate more. Also we did the same with the other characters; we gave them similar clothes to what we think our audience watching the film would also wear but then we also put emphasis on certain parts of clothing that we felt audience would notice the most such as the shoes for Ben.
